Custom Designs

Ready to think about your own car? We have several railroad car designs to choose from, and each allows for customization. All are based on original designs from over a century ago and range from 16 to 30 feet in length. Boxcars have large doors on the long sides and originally had normal doors on each end. Cabooses typically have the doors on the ends and come with and without a cupola. Our reproduction railroad cars are available for purchase at any level of finishing. We can build you a shell that you finish on your own. We can do a complete build outside and in, and deliver your car ready for occupancy. Or, we can provide you anything in between. Interior appointments, doors, windows and many furnishings are hand made in our shop. All of our cars can be self contained similar to an RV with a personalized theme and a time tested robust construction. Decorative elements normally found in railroad cars from this period are available from our constantly growing collection of antiques or from carefully selected reproductions

A Note on Color

We often see the past in black and white, as color photography wasn’t predominant until the mid-20th century. But transportation equipment in the past was actually alive with color. Boxcars, for example, were often owned by the company that used them. Dairy, Meat and Brewery industries decorated their cars with product advertising. The large flat boxcar siding was like a billboard through every town on the line -- the perfect opportunity to promote a brand. This practice was so popular, problematic and competitive that the railroads actually had to stop allowing it, a restriction that is still in place today. But your Roundhouse Workshop reproduction railroad car has no such restrictions.
