INDEPENDENT SINGLE FLOOR LIVING
Our recreation of a 1870s vintage caboose.
Our beautiful little bobber caboose is finished and she is just amazing! Lucy is looking for family
and someone who will treasure her as much as we do.
Over a thousand man hours went in to her creation and nearly as much into historic research,
3D design, models, planning, renderings and drawings.
Lucy is a Narrow gauge caboose. Narrow gauge railroad equipment is about three quarters of
the size of bigger and heavier standard railroad equipment. Lucy is road legal and ready to travel
just about anywhere!
Unlike moving and setting up a larger standard railroad caboose or car, no cranes, semi trucks,
trailers, permits or tracks are required. Lucy can go anywhere you can tow her! Her heavy duty
trailer is custom designed and fabricated just for her and she can be towed with just about any
modern full size pickup.
This tiny house on wheels is from your great great great grand dad’s generation and she was
built from the trailer up using many of the same materials, methods and technology. Nearly
everything you see or touch was made by hand and quite often using unpowered hand tools as
old as the type of vintage caboose we were recreating. Doors, windows, furnishings, upholstery,
casings, trim and more were crafted not on an assembly line, or in a factory, but in a nearly two
century old barn and entirely through the hands of just a few individuals.
Lucy welcomes all!
Lucy’s has had hundreds of visitors and we are often asked where we got the old caboose. Most
are surprised to learn that she is new. Lucy’s warm, cozy interior has the features and vintage
appearance of an original but comfortably balances modern needs and expectations.
Just like a real caboose, workmanship is deliberately but beautifully simple and designed for
hard and sustained use while remaining easier to repair and maintain.
Lucy is only 16 feet long inside but she offers sleeping accommodations for four. Just visiting? At
our towns local Winter Holiday event you would have found six and more smiling friends and
neighbours inside, keeping warm, chatting, munching on sugar cookies and sipping hot cider.
