Our Story
From 2005-2017, The Roundhouse Workshop helped homeowners throughout the Capital Region of New Hampshire with their maintenance and renovation projects. Our motto was "No Job Too Small to Give Chi a Call." However, as a lifelong railfan, I couldn’t get the rhythm of the rails out of my head. After many successful years, collaborations with amazing clients and sub-contractors, and countless projects, I switched tracks. Together with a multi-talented friend and collaborator, I started a new chapter for the Roundhouse Workshop (a chapter more fitting for our name). Our love of trains goes back to childhood and our experience restoring them goes back a couple of decades, when we worked together on a short line railroad rehabbing passenger railcars. Our combined experience with and interests in trains, carpentry, timber framing, design, mechanics, history, preservation, cool hardware and hand tools, and travel trailers have come together in this venture -- reproduction railroad cars designed for personal use. If you are here, you probably share a love of Americana, nostalgia, or things that are truly unique. We look forward to serving your mobile small building needs and helping you realize your dreams.

Our Story
Our first reproduction boxcar was for business use. Like many builders we watched the Tiny House movement grow. We wondered if there was a “Tiny House” need for business or for people working from home. As former railroad employees and restorers of historic railroad equipment we knew a little railroad history. It could be argued that the very first tiny houses on wheels in America were early railroad cars. Operating in mostly wilderness, railroad cars provided a home, storage and work space for many railroad workers. We wondered could they serve our increasingly mobile society again? We knew that moving a full size boxcar or caboose anywhere on rails or not was impractical. We needed a reasonable, authentic and towable solution. We found it in railroad history. As America grew so did its need for transportation. Standard gauge locomotives cars and track are large, long and heavy. The early railroaders solution was to simply reduce the size of railroad equipment. It could then be hauled by horse and wagon anywhere there was a road or where one could be cut. The smaller equipment was called “Narrow Gauge” and for a time was viewed as the answer to the “Railroad Fever” then sweeping the nation. We discovered this innovative design was perfect for our needs. Weight, height and width were all within today’s legal road limits. With few exceptions our little cars would be near perfect reproductions of railroad cars that were more than a century old! We put the call out to neighbors, trades persons and friends who had skills we could apply to our tiny project. The response was overwhelming. It showed us there was not only in interest in what we were building but that they were interested in the history it represented! Our cars are truly the product of talented family, friends and neighbors.
